Artist Interviews

I learn a lot from artist interviews, more than from reviews or profiles. I love hearing artists talk about what the work is about as well as what it means to make it. 

Interviews offer insight into the interplay of an artist’s vision and inspiration with his / her studio practice and working process.

I began doing interviews in 2012 for a graduate seminar at the University of Iowa, Center for the Book, while I was a MFA student at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. (it’s complicated, see my resume!) 

I chose artists whose work I admire and whom I wished I could see in action in their studios.

These artists are transforming their papers into amazing objects. They use their command of the craft to create works whose worth, power and ability to move the viewer does not rely on the medium.

Since my own interest in art leans towards sculpture, this influenced my choices. I was familiar with the artists primarily through the fantastic magazine, Hand Papermaking. At the time, I had only seen the works of one of the artists in person. 

With each artist’s permission, I have shared their interview from 2012.
